The St. Louis Cardinals: There’s Always a Way

Suffering businesses can always find a way back up the mountain. The answers are there, even if such answers require overhauling products or services, reinventing marketing and distribution, or even changing the business model. Americans love the underdog and generally root for “the rebound,” whether it’s a person, a business or even a product. When Starbucks started closing stores and reshaping the company, weren’t there Starbucks supporters who wanted to see them bounce back and claim victory? You bet. Even in the huge wake of the iPhone’s success, there’s still a faction that wants BlackBerry to return to its glory days. “It ain’t over until the fat lady sings” may not apply to BlackBerry, though; as I think the grand ole gal has already begun her tune for the company, at least in the U.S.

The “never give up” attitude was front and present on Friday night. Whether you’re a sports fan or not, you can probably appreciate what took place on a baseball field in Washington D.C. After three innings in a game that meant the loser was done for the year, the St. Louis Cardinals found themselves behind 6-0. That’s a fairly steep hill in baseball, yet they chipped away throughout the following innings with a run here, a run there. Most likely, being down 6-0 in the fourth inning, even the most optimistic of fans were probably very doubtful of the Redbirds’ chances. Thinking the team had little hope, I thought of Apple. If you recall, there was a point in time when Apple was rotting in the orchard–and now the company is amazingly successful, far beyond what anyone could have possibly envisioned back in the dark days of the company.

So what happened in the baseball game? The Cardinals entered the final inning trailing 7-5…and won the game 9-7. It was a classic case of one batter at a time, one inning at a time, etc. Apple, Starbucks, BlackBerry, on down the line…one customer at a time, one day at a time…win or go home. Never say “quit.”
