Getting Ready for The Real World

How can you tell you’re in a room of career-focused college students? There’s leftover pizza.

Last evening, I spoke to a bright, very nice collection of Beta Alpha Psi members at The Ohio State University. If this is the future of accounting, then the “old guard” in the profession should feel pretty good.

We talked about their careers, how older generations at firms are adapting/not adapting to the needs of this age group, trends and hot issues in the accounting profession, technology, business development, IFRS and more. Exciting time with a great group of accountants-to-be.

Nearly half of these Beta Alpha Psi members have jobs lined up for when they graduate in the months ahead—and most of the rest of them are waist-deep in the interviewing pond. As expected, at this stage of the game, all commitments are with Big Four firms. Some students are staying in Columbus, but not all; PwC/New York, Deloitte/Cincinnati and Deloitte/Cleveland were just some of the positions accepted. Ernst & Young was the only Big Four firm to have not nabbed one of these young professionals.

Now, about that leftover pizza…

Driving Toward the Accounting Green

Landing a great job with a top-notch public accounting firm while you’re still in college must be a terrific feeling, as if you know you’re honed in on the future–and you’re excited about what is in store. At last Friday’s Ohio State University Beta Alpha Psi golf outing that took place on the far south side of Columbus, Ohio, I met a host of bright young people who are ready to tee it up in the profession.

The structure in which this outing was arranged held true to form with each foursome consisting of two young professionals and two students.

These fine-looking folks–two OSU juniors and two Ernst & Young chaps from the Columbus office are standing next to the iShade-sponsored hole…where they all played brilliantly, I might add.

I urge all accounting firms to help support Beta Alpha Psi and other organizations that strive to make the accounting profession an attractive career option. Grow the business!

A Great Time to Leap Into Accounting

I spoke with a bright young woman yesterday named Sarah Hambley. As president of the Beta Alpha Psi chapter at The Ohio State University, it was easy to hear the enthusiasm in her voice about what the future holds for today’s young accounting professionals. The conversation took me back a bit to my senior year of college, when I weighed less and had hair.

What an exciting time to be embarking upon a career as an accounting professional. I am looking forward to speaking with this group one evening this autumn after the new school year starts.
